done before it for the prophet ( - ) never did N?filah Sal?t before or after the shortened Thuhr Sal?t; he ( - ) only did N?filah Sal?t when doing the regular Sal?t. In addition to that, doing a complete Sal?t has more right than doing it shortened followed by its N?filah. Some Sah?bah said: ‘If I were to do N?filah Sal?t [for shortened Salaw?t], I would do the complete Sal?t first’. (1)

If it were raised that Al-Bukh?r? himself titled one of his chapters with “Doing N?filah after the Jumu‘ah Sal?t and before it”, then narrated that Abdull?h Ibn Y?suf told him that M?lik told him from N?fi‘ from Ibn ‘Umar ( - رضي الله عنه -) that ‘the prophet ( - ) used to do two Rak‘ahs before Thuhr Sal?t and two Rak‘ahs after it, two Rak‘ahs after Maghrib Sal?t, two Rak‘ahs after the ‘Ish?’ and two Rak‘ahs after the Jumu‘ah Sal?t after he goes home’. The answer is that the way Al-Bukh?r? formed his titles indicates that he is raising an equiry as to whether the prophet ( - ) had done any N?filah Sal?t before or after the Jumu‘ah Sal?t. Then he mentioned the had?th to affirm that he ( - ) never did any N?filah before the Jumu‘ah Sal?t but two Rak‘ahs after it.

This was indeed Al-Bukh?r?’s way of forming titles for his Sah?h’s chapters; another example: he titled one of the chapters in “Kit?b Al-Eid” with: “Doing N?filah before the Eid Sal?t and after it”. (3) Then he mentioned only one had?th that affirms the illegality of doing N?filah Sal?t before or after the Eid Sal?t. (4)

‘Accordingly, most of the Im?ms agreed that no N?filah Sal?t is to be done before the Jumu‘ah at a certain time with a certain number or Rak‘ahs for this was not affirmed to be done or ordered to be done by the prophet ( - ).
