Ibn Al-Hum?m said: ‘Muslims should try their best in doing Qun?t at times of afflictions for the prophet ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) never did Qun?t after the one he ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) did for a month [in Fajr Sal?t]. Accordingly, it could be inferred that Qun?t should be done only at times of afflictions as was done [by the Sah?bah] after his ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) death’. (1)

It was affirmed that Ab? Bakr ( - رضي الله عنه -) did Qun?t when he launched war on Musailamah -the renegade. So did ‘Umar, ‘Al? and Mu’?wiyah ( - رضي الله عنهم -) at times of afflictions.

An-Nawaw? said: ‘It was related that ‘Umar ( - رضي الله عنه -) said in his Qun?t ‘O All?h! Torture the people of the scriptures - the Jews and the Nas?r?’- for they were fighting muslims at his time. These days, one better say in his Qun?t: All?h! ‘Torture the Kuff?r’. It is more general’. (2)

[7/ 20] It was affirmed that the prophet’s ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) Sah?bah never said any thing- when the prophet ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) used to recite Qun?t - but ‘‘?m?n’. Accordingly, one must not add other words to it, such as ‘Haq’ [the truth] or ‘Ash hadu’ [I bear witness], or turning one’s hands up side down (3) when asking All?h’s ( - عز وجل -) curse to be poured on the Kuff?r and his mercy to encompass all Muslims.

[8/ 20] One of the mistakes many muslims make when reciting Du‘?’ul Qun?t is to recite the word “Ya ‘izzu” as “Ya ‘azzu”.

As-Suy?t? was asked about the right pronunciation of the word “Ya ‘izzu”. He answered: ‘the right pronunciation of the word is “Ya ‘izzu” as is agreed upon amongst the ‘Ulamah of Had?th and the linguists. I compiled a book under the title “Al-I‘r?d Wat Tawall? ‘Amman L? Yuhsinu yusall?” then I renamed it as “Ath-Thub?t Fi Dabt Al-Qun?t”. (4)

It is also a mistake to pronounce the word as “Ya ‘uzzu”, so pay heed to this.
