This is indeed supported by the prophet’s had?th which he addressed to his Sah?bah seeing them moving in Sal?t purposelessly, he ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) said: ‘why do you raise your hands in Sal?t as restless horses do with their tails?! Keep calm in your Sal?t’. (1) Accordingly, it is a mistake to hold the Mushaf following the Im?m while the latter is reciting Qur’?n to check his recitation though some of those who hold the Mushaf could bearly read.

It is worth mentioning here that the had?th that is related by a wide sector of muslims which states that the prophet ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) said -regarding the person who was playing with his beard in Sal?t: ‘Were this person’s heart fully given to Sal?t, he would have kept calm in it’; this had?th is a forged one.

Having narrated it in his “Al-J?mi ‘us Sag?r” (vol. 5 / no. 319) from Al-H?kim, As-Suy?t?, stated that it is weak.

Al-Man?w? said: ‘Az-Zain Al-’Ir?q? stated in “Sharh At-Tirmith?” that in this had?th’s chain of narrators there is Sulaim?n Ibn ‘Amru -Ab? D?w?d An-Nakh’?- whom all scholars considered as a weak narrator. This ‘Athar is traced back to be a saying of Ibn Al-Musayyab.

Ibn Qud?mah stated in “Al-Mugn?” the same and said that it is traced back to Sa‘?d Ibn Al-Musayyab.

In his “Musannaf”, Ibn Ab? Shaibah narrated it and in its chain of narrators there is an unknown man, his son said:

‘In its chain of narration there is Sulaim?n Ibn ‘Amru who is a weak narrator as agreed upon amongst scholars’. Az-Zayla‘i reported nearly the same from Ibn ‘Ad? who reported that scholars agreed that Sulaiman is a fabricator of ah?d?th’. (2)

I believe that this narration is traced back to Sa‘?d -as Ibn Al-Mubarak stated in “Az-Zuhd”- from an unknown narrator; accordingly, the had?th is considered a forged one if traced back to

(1) Narrated by Muslim in his “Sah?h” (no. 430), Ibn Khuzaimah in his “Sah?h” (no. 1544), An-Nas?’? in “Al Mujtab?” (vol. 2 / p. 72).
