Ibn Mas’?d, An-Nakh‘?, Ath-Thawr?, Ibn Al-Mub?rak, Muj?hid, Ash-Sh?fi‘? and ‘At?’ all held the opinion that doing Sadl [i.e. wrapping oneself with one garment] in Sal?t is prohibited.

The ‘Ulamah differed concerning the meaning of Sadl:

Some say: It means to let the garment down to reach the ground. This interpretation is of Ash-Sh?fi‘? (1) and it is synonymous to the Isb?l discussed in the previous point [point four].

Im?m Ahmad (2) held the opinion that Sadl means to place one’s garment over one’s shoulders then leave it hanged down with out putting one’s arms into its sleeves, the chance that the shoulders be uncovered is possible. This will be discussed later In Sh?’a All?h ( - ).

Ibn Al-’Ath?r, the author of “An-Nih?yah” said: ‘Sadl means to wrap one’s body with a garment putting his arms inside and does Ruk?’and Suj?d in such a state ... This ruling also applies on the Qam?s and other [similar] garments’. (3)

This interpretation of the word is synonymous to “Ishtim?lus Samm?’ ” which All?h’s Messenger ( - ) prohibited as Ab? Sa‘?d Al-Khudr? related. (4)

Linguists say that Ishtim?lus Samm?’ means to wrap one’s body with a garment with out leaving out lets for the arms to get out from.
