you asked your mate to be quiet on Friday while the Im?m is delivering his speech, you have then committed Laghw [idle talk or deed]’. (1) This Laghw causes one’s reward to loss.

An-Nadr Ibn Shumail interpreted Laghw as ‘the loss of reward’. It is also said that ‘one’s superiority of one’s attendance for Jumu‘ah Sal?t is null and void’ and also said that ‘Laghw means that one’s Jumu‘ah Sal?t has turned into Thuhr Sal?t’. (2)

The following Ah?d?th support the first two interpretations.

1 - Ab? Hurairah ( - رضي الله عنه -) related that once while the prophet ( - ) was delivering his speech on Friday, Ab? Thar asked ‘Ubai Ibn Ka‘b ( - رضي الله عنه -) regarding the time a certain S?rah of the Qur’?n was revealed. ‘Ubai ( - رضي الله عنه -) did not provide any answer. Having finished his Jumu‘ah Sal?t, ‘Ubai addressed Ab? Thar saying: ‘You have gained nothing of your Sal?t but that Laghw you did’. Hearing this, Ab? Thar hurried to the prophet ( - ) and told him what has happened. He ( - ) said: ‘ ‘Ubai has spoken the truth’. (3)

(1) This had?th’s narrators were previously mentioned.

(2) “Fathul B?r?” (vol. 2 / p. 414).

(3) Narrated by: At-Tay?lis? in “Al-Musnad” (no. 2365), Al-Baihaq? in “As-Sunnan Al-Kubr?” (vol. 3 / p. 220), At-Tah?w? in “Sharh Ma‘?n? Al-?thar” (vol. 1 / p. 367), and Al-Bazz?r as mentioned in “Al-Majam‘” (vol. 2 / p. 185). The had?th’s chain of narrators is good.

There is another supporting narration traced back to ‘Ubai Ibn Ka‘b narrated by: Ibn M?jah in “As-Sunnan” (no. 1111) and Abdull?h Ibn Ahmad in “Zaw?’id Al-Musnad” (vol. 5 / p. 143). This narration’s chain of narrators is good.

In “At-Targh?b Wat Tarh?b” (vol. 1 / p. 257), Al-Munthir? considered the had?th’s chain of narration as good. In “Misb?h Az-Zuj?jah” (L. 77 / A), Al-Buseir? ranked the had?th’s narrators as trust worthy.

In “H?shiyat Ibn M?jah” (vol. 1 / p. 343), As-Sind? said: ‘The chain of narrators is authentic and the narrators are trust worthy ones’.

I believe that As-Sind? believed so for the many supporting narrations the had?th has, some of which are the following:

* J?bir’s had?th narrated by: Ab? Ya‘l? in “Al-Musnad” (vol. 3 / p. 335) (no. 1799), Ibn Hibb?n (no. 577), Sa‘?d Ibn Mans?r as mentioned in “Z?d al-Ma‘?d” (vol. 1 / p. 431), At-Tabar?n? in “Al-Wasat” and “Al-Kab?r”.

The narrators for whom Ab? Ya‘l? narrated are trust worthy one as mentioned in “Al-Majma‘” (vol. 12 / p. 185).

* Sa‘d Ibn Ab? Waqq?s had?th, narrated by: ... =

= ... Ab? Ya‘l? in “Al-Musnad” (vol. 2 / p. 66) (no. 708) and Al-Bazz?r in “Majma‘ Az-Zaw?‘id” (no. 185). In his chain’s of narrators, ther is Muj?lid Ibn S?’id.

* Abdull?h’s Ibn Mas‘?d had?th, narrated by:

At-Tabar?n? in “Al-Kab?r” (vol. 9 / p. 357) (no. 9541).
