[9/ 40] The fifth: Some Im?ms make the second Rak‘ah longer than the first one -whether in secret or audible Sal?t- the thing which contradicts the prophet’s ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) Sunnah.
[Concerning this] Ibn Al-Qayyim said: ‘He ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) used to make the first Rak‘ah longer than the second one in the dawn Sal?t and all other Salaw?t -especially Thuhr Sal?t till he ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) hears no more steps. (1) ’ (2)
Ibn Razz?q called such a practice as Bid‘ah as was previously mentioned.
Certain cases are excluded from this ruling depending on special evidences, such as: the Sal?t done on Friday and the two Eids; in the first Rak‘ah the Im?m recites S?rat Al-A‘l? and in the second he recites Al-G?shiyah and the latter includes seven more verses than former.
[10/ 40] The sixth: There is no authentic had?th that indicates the permissibility of keeping silent for a while by the Im?m after reciting F?tihah to give the Ma’m?m?n a chance to recite it in the audible Sal?t. (3)
[11/ 40] The seventh: some Im?ms’ recitation in the audible Sal?t is too short; some may even recite the verses that begin with ‘O! You who believe’ to the end of the S?rah, the thing which contradicts the prophet’s ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) Sunnah.
This is clearly established in Ibn Al-Qayyim’s statements which run as follow: ‘It is not of the prophet’s ( - صلى الله عليه وسلم -) Sunnah to recite only the last few verses of the Surahs that include ‘O! you who believe’. (4)
(1) In this had?th’s chain of narrators, there is an unknown narrator. So it is weak. See: “Naylul ’Awt?r” (vol. 3 / p. 117), “Irw?’ul Gal?l” (no. 513) and “Tam?mul Minnah” (p. 182).
